The Spectacular Geology

Picture the scene - 540 million years ago colliding tectonic plates resulted in mountains of the scale of the Himalayas.  West of Camas nan Geall it is possible to see remnants of the collision - folds of 20 Metres

A land on fire

Around 65 million years ago a dramatic change occurred as the North American and European plates parted and the Atlantic Ocean expanded.  The stretching and deformation led to a land on fire and vast outpourings of lava.  The hills and outcrops around Rudh Dubh indicate the last stages of the main volcano

After the fire... came the ice

The landscape was buried under a 4000 foot thick layer of ice bringing 'U' shaped valleys and rounded hills.  As the ice receded the land began to rise and the level stabilised... for now
